Purchases with ServiRed Cards rose by 16.2% in 2003

Madrid, Spain – March, 2004

Total purchases made with cards issued by members of ServiRed (*) reached 34,190 million in 2003, representing an increase of 16.2% for the year. This growth was smaller than the average annual increases of about 20% posted in recent years.

The number of ServiRed cards transactions made in the year grew at the even smaller rate of 11.6%. This was because the average purchase amount rose by 4.1%, and the average spending per card rose by 8.5% in the year.

Card purchases by Spaniards abroad increased by 25.7% in the year, while card purchases made by foreigners in Spain grew by only 7.7%.

The volume of cash withdrawals made at ATMs in 2003 grew by 9.9%, while the number of such withdrawals increased by 3.5%. The average withdrawal amount was about 100 euros, and the number of withdrawals per card fell by 3.4%.

(*) At the end of the year ServiRed had 108 members, including banks, savings and loan institutions, and credit cooperatives, although the annual figures given here refer to only 106, because they exclude those of Banco de Sabadell and Banco Zaragozano which joined late in the year. At the end of 2003 ServiRed members had a total of 26,027 active ATMs and 342,393 active point-of-sale terminals.
