Welcome to the ServiRed Payments Network --cutting-edge technology at the service of Financial Institutions.

ServiRed Sociedad Espaņola de Medios de Pago, S.A. is a payments scheme with 38.7 million cards (credit and debit), 727,081 merchants and 32,685 ATMs. It is a 100% Spanish-owned limited liability Company, with 101 shareholders of his 104 financial institutions members.

The chief objecting of ServiRed is to assist its members in the substitution of cash by innovating and effective electronic payments system in order to reduce the huge cost to society as a whole of managing cash.

Today ServiRed operates solely within the Spanish market. However, the advent of the SEPA opens a range of possibilities whereby domestic payments schemes may begin to provide services in other markets of Europe. ServiRed enjoys an excellent reputation in the industry on a European level and is well positioned to accompany its member institutions in their European expansion.

In addition to meeting the needs of the Spanish market, the ServiRed scheme furnishes international interoperability via co-branding with the international card brands Visa and MasterCard. To this effect, ServiRed is a licensed Group Member of Visa Europe and a Principal Member of MasterCard International. By virtue of these licenses, ServiRed members are empowered to issue cards and acquire transaction under the Visa and MasterCard brands.

Like all self-respecting payments schemes, ServiRed rests on three pillars in the supply of its services:

  • the brand
  • operational and functional regulations
  • and the interchange system

The most important functions performed by ServiRed in its effort to substitute cash are the following:

  1. To ensure the complete interoperability of transactions carried out domestically via constant cooperation with the other two domestic schemes operating in Spain.
  2. To guarantee international access ServiRed cardholders, through direct links to international schemes (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, JCB, Citicorp, etc.)
  3. To ensure the acceptance of cards from other countries that are used in merchants acquired by financial institutions that are part of the ServiRed scheme.
  4. To look out for the correct use of the ServiRed brand, the design of ServiRed cards, and the other characteristics of the products issued by ServiRed members.
  5. To look out for the proper signing of the merchants and acceptance terminals (POS and ATMs), and for their proper operations.
  6. To carry out the authorisation, clearing, and settlement procedures of the interchange transaction among ServiRed members and between the members and other payments networks, in an accurate, fast, and incident-free manner.
  7. To certify the solutions proposed by makers of terminals to ServiRed members, thus ensuring their proper operation once connected to the central interchange system.
  8. To arbitrate in any issues that may arise among financial institutions from the use of the shared network.

All the foregoing is framed within an ongoing commercial and technological innovation, which allows, ServiRed cardholders, with the same procedures, to make payments at millions of merchants in Spain and the entire world, conveniently and securely.

Likewise, the use of ServiRed cards facilitates the managements of business expenses by the merchants that accept them, and provides greater security, by eliminating the negative aspects of cash, such as the risk of theft or loss.
